UN unveils art installation to celebrate 70th anniversary

NEW YORK (AP) — The United Nations has unveiled a new art installation in Central Park to celebrate its 70th anniversary.

The work by Spanish artist Cristobal Gabarron (Gah-bahr-ROHN') is titled "Enlightened Universe."

The interactive installation is a sphere surrounded by a colorful spiral of 70 life-size figures, one for each year of the U.N.'s existence.

Visitors can walk through the stainless steel artwork to the center of the sphere where images highlight the achievements and values of the U.N.

It sits in the park's Rumsey Playing Field near East 69th Street.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon unveiled it on Saturday. It will remain in the park through Nov. 15.

Gabarron's other works include the Olympic Mural for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
