Mascot drama at Rutgers
The state of New Jersey is quite diverse. So, too, is its state school, Rutgers University.
It's so diverse that the Student Assembly voted Wednesday to give the Scarlet Knight, the blue-eyed, fair-skinned university mascot, some "mascot friends."
The university will add add homosexual, female, transgender and multiple racial incarnations of the Scarlet Knight to more accurately represent the student body.
Chaser Rohan Mohanty talked to students on campus Wednesday about the plan.
"I think they are overreacting, having a black knight. Have you seen a black knight?" asked Francisco, a junior. "A woman or Indian is pushing it a little. Maybe we should have a neutral mascot with the face covered."
Eyvans, a sophomore, took another view. "I wouldn't mind a female. A black one would be good. Maybe it would be good to have them all."
