A man was shot dead this afternoon in unincorporated Alameda County, near San Leandro, while trying to sell an cell phone to another person, a sheriff's spokesman said.

Deputies responded at 1:15 p.m. to East 14th Street and 159th Avenue near the Bayfair Center where they found a 32-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the victim met up with two people who responded to his ad on Letgo, an app that allows you to buy and sell used stuff.

Kelly said the suspects drove away after the shooting and they do not have witnesses at this time. They are looking at surveillance cameras in the area.

Police are now warning buyers and sellers of online items to make use of the safe exchange zones offered by police departments.

These are clearly marked parking lots in police stations or police lobbies. You can find them throughout Alameda County, Contra Costa County, and Daly City.
