Commissioners vote to move Confederate statue in Lakeland

A motion to move a Confederate statue in Lakeland was passed by Lakeland city commissioners Monday.

In a vote of four to three, commissioners voted to move the statue in the center of Munn Park to another location, yet to be determined.

Dozens of residents signed up to speak before the commission.

44 of them were in favor of moving it, 16 of them wanted to keep it where it was, and at least two wanted the people to vote on it.

The Confederate statue is a memorial to Confederate soldiers killed in action. The marble monument standing 26 feet tall was dedicated in 1910 in Lakeland by the Lakeland Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
