Braves' Hector Olivera charged with assault at Va. hotel
ARLINGTON, Va. - Atlanta Braves player Hector Olivera has been charged with assault and battery in a dispute with a woman at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Arlington, Va., police said Wednesday. The Braves are in town for a four-game series against the Washington Nationals.
Police say a woman called 911 from the Ritz Carlton in Pentagon City on Wednesday morning saying she had been assaulted by Olivera inside a hotel room.
According to police, the victim had bruises and was transported to Virginia Hospital Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Olivera was taken into custody by police at the hotel and has been cooperating with officers.
Police said Olivera and the woman knew each other, but they do not know the relationship between the two. They had been drinking prior to the dispute.
The Braves released a statement on Wednesday saying, “We are extremely disappointed and troubled to learn of the allegations involving Hector Olivera. We will continue to gather information and will address this matter appropriately as we determine the facts. Major League Baseball has placed Olivera on Administrative Leave effective immediately."
Olivera's attorney said his client has been released after posting $10,000 bond.
The Braves acquired the 31-year-old infielder in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. Olivera signed a 6-year, $62.5 million contract with the Dodgers last year after defecting from Cuba.
