MIAMI (WOFL FOX 35) - The Florida Highway Patrol is responding to a multiple vehicle crash along the Alligator Alley segment of Interstate 75 in South Florida. At least one person has died and 16 are injured -- five of whom have been transported to area hospitals as trauma alerts.
Units from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue are coordinating rescue efforts along the westbound lanes of Mile Marker 40.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, five vehicles were involved in the crash, two of which rolled over. Rescue crews pronounced one dead at the scene and set up a triage area on the side of the roadway to treat victims who sustained minor injuries. Some of those with serious injuries have been transported by helicopter.
Troopers have shut down all westbound lanes while they continue to investigate and are urging travelers to seek alternate routes.
