As protesters fought a pipeline construction project that would run through the Standing Rock Reservation, which belongs to the Sioux Native Americans in North Dakota, members of the Ramapough tribe in Mahwah, New Jersey are fearful the last piece of their own sacred land is at stake.
The Split Rock Sweetwater Camp is where the Ramapoughs worship at what they call their "big house." Chief Dwaine Perry shared the letter from Mahwah officials, which states that the land cannot be used as a "place of public assembly" without zoning approval.
Perry said this is one of many instances his people have been threatened and bullied. He said around Veterans Day someone wrote the word "hate" and a swastika on a sacred stone.
The Mahwah zoning director said the letter speaks for itself and wouldn't comment further.
