Police director has side job 150 miles away
MY9NJ.COM - Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale has taken on a second job with the Hazleton, PA, Police Department. He will serve as Hazelton's part-time interim police chief.
Paterson Councilman Mohammed Akhtaruzzaman has been critical of the side job, saying Speziale is needed full time in Paterson.
In 2014, there were 26 murders in Paterson. In 2015, there were 17. We spoke to Speziale at police headquarters, where he told us his second job would actually help Paterson's police work.
"We have a very big nexus between Paterson and Hazleton with guns being traded here, and heroin. So it's putting guns on our streets and it's putting heroin on the streets of Hazleton. It's actually a good thing."
