Helmet covers for youth sports

Football season is officially over, but players and their health continues to be a hot topic.

Former Jets Player John Roman started a company Defend Your Head, based in suburban Philadelphia. Defend Your head makes a special layer for helmets which is intended to lessen the risk of concussion in football players.

The shell weighs about a pound and is said to reduce the impact of blows to the head by 18 percent.

Roman discussed the importance the helmet protector serves in the prevention of chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE, a brain disease caused by repeated blows to the head. CTE can't be diagnosed until after death.

"I think as the game evolves more people, neurologists, biochemical engineers will come up with a way to make the game safer," Roman said.
